What converting JPG to PNG does — and doesn't — do
Converting JPG to PNG gives you a lossless copy: from that point on, re-saving and editing will not pile on more compression damage, which is why PNG is the better working format for screenshots, graphics, and anything you will edit repeatedly. What it cannot do is undo what JPG already discarded. If the original JPG has visible blocky artefacts or soft edges, those are baked into the pixels and the PNG faithfully preserves them — it does not restore lost detail. Think of it as freezing the image at its current quality, not improving it.
About transparency
People often convert to PNG expecting a transparent background, but JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG arrives with a normal opaque background. PNG is merely capable of transparency; making an area see-through is a separate editing step in an image editor, where you erase or mask the background.
